Next Hinojosa wrote, again in English, the book of poems Korean Love Songs (1978). It was published by Editorial Justa. In 197980, he wrote Claros Varones de Belken in Spanish, but it was not published until 1986, after Bilingual Press/Editorial Bilingüe had Julia Cruz translate it into English. In 1981, Mi querido Rafa was published by Arte Püblico. Hinojosa rewrote it in English as Dear Rafe, and, in 1985, Arte Público released the new edition. In 1982, Rites and Witnesses: A Comedy was published by Arte Público.

From 1953 to 1956, and again from 1959 to 1961, Hinojosa taught Spanish, history, and government at Brownsville High School, but between 1956 and 1961, he worked for a chemical company and did a stint with the U. S. Civil Service Commission. In 1961, he entered New Mexico Highlands University and took a master's degree in Spanish in 1962. D. in Spanish at the University of Illinois, graduating in 1969. His first university job was in the Foreign Language Department at Trinity University in San Antonio, where he taught from 1968 to 1970.

And, as much as anything else, Hinojosa's characters are caught up in the quest to attain the American Dream in the most conventional sense of that term: the good life, the affluent, materially comfortable life. But that life may have to be purchased at the cost of a satisfying spiritual or internal life. The search for the good life that we see in the Death Trip, at its present state of completion, endorses educational and material advantage over ethnic homogeneity. Denis Donoghue calls this outlook "Franklinism" (12), arguing that as one operates under this "ism," he also experiences a "deep self-criticism for the part that goes along willingly enough with acquisition and greed'' (8).
