4 Conclusions important to ask whether and how case-study research can contribute to strengthening causal understanding in the wake of regression analysis. Such research sequences, beginning either with an influential regression analysis from the literature or with a scholar’s own regression work, are a common form of multi-method research, and a systematic understanding of the specific contribution of case-study work in such setups may offer opportunities to design and implement them more productively.

While the potential-outcomes framework does not emphasize such arrangements of elements, it does nonetheless share a central concern of several authors who contribute to the mechanisms and capacities approaches: singular causation as the essence of causality. In Cartwright’s words: Singular causal claims are primary. This is true in two senses. First, they are a necessary ingredient in the methods we use to establish generic causal claims. Even the methods that test causal laws by looking for regularities will not work unless some singular causal information is filled in first.

The task of measuring political regimes has of course spawned substantial qualitative debates as well (see discussion in Collier and Levitsky 1997; Munck 2009). The existence and prominence of these debates in literatures driven by causal inference suffice to demonstrate that both qualitative and quantitative scholars regard measurement as a key issue in causal inference – although the traditions bring substantially different sets of tools to bear in evaluating measurement quality (Seawright and Collier 2014).
