47 In all the therapies I do I make it a practice to inquire from time to time about what is going on in the family of origin. For example, the wife's mother may be dying of cancer or a father and his brother are breaking up a business partnership with much bitterness. I have found that events such as these are not mentioned in the therapy sessions unless I specifically ask about the family of origin. Adults in marital or family therapy do not, ordinarily, volunteer information about their current relationship with parents or siblings; the therapist has to ask to get that information.
Out-of-town clients who request family-of-origin sessions have overcome most of their reluctances although they, too, have their own resistances when they start making actual preparations for the sessions. Although hesitancy or downright refusal to bringing in family of origin occurs with practically all clients, the resistances are diminished and more easily managed in the couples group context. In the material that follows it should be kept in mind that most of the techniques for dealing with the resistances apply to all the therapy contexts even though the couples group context is discussed at length.
I am able to convert many of my individual clients into wider system cases, particularly family therapy cases, but nonetheless I still occasionally see clients in extended individual psychotherapy. In my early days of doing individual psychotherapy, and based on my psychodynamic orientation, I dealt directly with transference phenomena, which are ubiquitous in all therapy contexts. However, since I started working with families and couples in the late 1950s, and as the years have gone by, I have placed less and less emphasis on transference to the therapist as a therapeutic tool and 53 have focused almost exclusively on the transference distortions between the intimates.
