This father is proposed to be the ‘sire father’ – loving first, but also ‘strict and strong’. However, Reeves comes across a problem in Winnicott’s implicit description of the two fathers: Underlying the problem is Winnicott’s desire to retain both options, to insist on the father’s distinctiveness of role and differentiation from mother where the family unit is being viewed as a threesome, while laying stress on the essential continuity of the father’s role with that of the mother, when the focus is on the dyadic ‘core’ of the family – the mother and the baby.
