People need to taste themselves, to chew on, digest each other. For some, therapy is a temporary support. They want to gather themselves and move on. For some, it is a way of life, a life-long process. Most are somewhere in between. One would like to think of therapy as a tool or method but it is more. It is not like an X-ray machine or surgical operation. It is part of the fabric of who one is, the fabric of meaning, the feel of life, one’s own life. We are not talking about particular organs.
For example, some people who have rages might notice that their rages scare their children and that the rages of their own parents scared them. They might connect with the fact that their tantrums make their children withdrawn or aggressive or anxious or just plain hurt. They may feel badly and fight to oppose their tendency to injure those close to them, and grieve over how they themselves were injured. However, some people simply do not catch on. They remain blind to themselves. Or, if they see, feel helpless to do anything about it.
For affection? For long-term bonds? For short-term excitement? For beauty? For rage? Is the God centre close to the sex and anger centres? At least we have evolved to the point where we can ask questions of our brain. Even if we are programmed for destruction, we can address our chemistry and structure and have a say in what we do with it. We may, to some extent, even modify what our brain does, and can do so by what we do. I don’t mean use of chemicals to modify brain chemistry, although that is a popular pursuit today.
