Jazz became synonymous with New Orleans’s Storyville, the country’s first legally designated prostitution district. Storyville flourished from 1897 to 1917 and helped expose a wider audience to jazz. Jazz musicians like Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong played for tips in the parlors of the district’s houses of ill repute, and they were expected to play whatever music the patrons wanted. The federal government closed down Storyville in 1917 during World War I over the objections of New Orleans’s city hall, claiming that the district was a threat to national security.
