Whether a shared value statement of digital humanities could be formulated, and, if so, whether it would bring about a coherent identity of the field remains to be seen. For now, unresolved disciplinary questions and debates create circumstances in which the descriptors progressively developing, diversifying, and intensifying can be applied equally to digital humanities as a field, and to the controversies that surround it. Under such circumstances, the approach that refocuses our analytical lens from digital humanities to digital humanists gains in prominence.

It involved 258 participants including researchers, faculty, students, university administrators, librarians, software developers, policy makers, and funders. The study comprised two phases. The first phase focused on digital scholarship in the humanities, exploring the situatedness of digital tools, methods, and resources in everyday scholarly practice, challenges of research tool development, criteria for funding and evaluating digital research projects, approaches to establishing research centers and educational initiatives, and so on.

Indeed, the examples cited in the previous section, which originate from established authorities in the field—Unsworth, Ramsay, Burdick and colleagues—portray digital humanities as an applied Digital Humanities as Theory and Practice ● 25 field of building and modeling, where, ironically, study of the resulting digital artifacts remains beyond the field’s scope. In other words, while digital humanists build and use tools, studying those tools and/or how people interact with them is not necessarily part of their inquiry.
