Denise Chávez is a member of the very noticeable phenomenon of Chicana writers publishing since the late 1980s. Like several of these writers, however, her writing activity began in the 1970s. Chávez wrote nineteen plays from 1973 to 1987, based on Mexican religious observances, social, and existential issues. Like other Chicano writers who compose juvenile books, Chávez has written children’s plays, such as The Flying Tortilla Man (1975). Her recent novels capture southern New Mexico landscapes as well as specific cultural elements in small Mexican-American communities.
